Fantastic Four #148
One Battle After Another
All of us are still reeling from the threat of the Richards divorce. Meanwhile, the cover says we’re about to tangle with the Frightful Four, who are the Keystone Cops of the FF rogues’ gallery. They were last seen in issue #136.
Reed, Ben, Johnny, and Medusa return to the Baxter Building, and Reed looks rough, sporting a beard. The Sandman bashes the elevator door, trapping the team inside, but Reed manages to slither through an opening. Just as Ben tries to engage in the fight, Sandman escapes through an air vent.
When the Frightful Four launch a second wave of their attack (the villains have established a base on a lower floor of the Baxter Building), Johnny is neutralized by The Trapster. The Wizard does the same to Reed and Medusa with his handy anti-gravity devices.
On the top floor, Thing and Sandman are trading haymakers. In a surprise twist, Thundra shows up, joining in the attack against Sandman, though she never explains why. As Thing knocks him unconscious, Johnny is defeating Trapster and Wizard. The threat is over — until a final double-page spread, where Sub-Mariner (accompanied by a terrified-looking Sue Richards) is riding a sea creature and declaring war against all surface people.
Yikes, what a cliffhanger.
